Nancy Condee teaches in the Slavic Department and is affiliated with Film Studies and Cultural Studies. Her field is contemporary Russian cinema and cultural politics.
Her research includes the volumes Soviet Hieroglyphics: Visual Culture in Late 20th Century Russia (British Film Institute and Indiana University Press, 1995), Endquote: Sots-Art Literature and Soviet Grand Style (with Marina Balina and Evgeny Dobrenko; Northwestern University Press, 2000), Antinomies of Art and Culture: Modernity, Postmodernity, Contemporaneity (with Terry Smith and Okwui Enwezor; Duke University Press: forthcoming 2007), and Imperial Trace (Oxford University Press: forthcoming 2008), as well as more than eighty articles and essays in Sight and Sound, The Nation, October, New Left Review, New Formations, PMLA, Wide Angle, Framework, boundary 2, and major Russian journals, such as Iskusstvo kino, Znamia, Voprosy literatury, and Novoe literaturnoe obozrenie. She is one of two US film scholars invited and supported each year by Russia's Kinotavr International Film Festival (Sochi) and is regularly interviewed on contemporary cinema by BBC World Service (The World), BBC Russian Service (Vam slovo), Radio Liberty (Russian Service), Voice of America, as well as Russian radio and television (REN-TV, STS-TV, Ekho-Moskvy, Russian Cultural Navigator).
She is Senior Associate Member at St. Antony's (Oxford) and has recently served as Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Council on Eurasian and East European Research (NCEEER), the largest US grant agency for federal funding of basic research in the former second world (2000-2006). She has recently been appointed to the Oxford University (New College) Research Network Russian National Identity Since 1961: Traditions and Deterritorialisation , a two-year, trilateral (UK, Russia, US) research network funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (UK), 2007-2009.Nancy Condee is co-founder and co-editor of the journal Studies in Russian and Soviet Cinema (Intellect Books), on the advisory board of the online cinema journal Kinokultura, and the editorial board of Critical Quarterly. She has worked as a consultant on film projects for the Public Broadcasting System (Frontline documentaries on the Soviet Union and Russia), the Edinburgh Festival, the National Film Theatre (London), the San Francisco Film Festival, and the Library of Congress. Funded by the Ford Foundation, she was Executive Producer for the CD-Rom Cinema of the Thaw Period (Moscow: Artima, 2002) and Project Director of the conversion of archival issues of Russia's lead cinema journal Iskusstvo kino to online accessibility. She is co-organizer, with Vladimir Padunov, of the Pittsburgh Film Symposium, held each year in May at the University of Pittsburgh.
