Jeannette E. South-Paul, MD
Professor and Chair
Jeannette E. South-Paul, M.D. joined the Department of Family Medicine at the University of
Pittsburgh in July 2001, as the Department Chair after serving for 22 years as a family
physician in the US Army. She served as the Chair of the Department of Family Medicine
at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Services for six years prior to her military
retirement. Dr. South-Paul is an alumna of the University of Pennsylvania and the medical
school at the University of Pittsburgh. She has served on multiple committees and task
forces related to minorities in medicine including the committee creating the COGME Minorities
in Medicine Report in 1997. She is currently the Chair of the Association of American Medical
Colleges' task force to develop a cultural competence curriculum for medical schools. She
also serves as the Senior Advisor for the American Academy of Family Physicians committee
that partnered with the Bureau of Primary Care of the Health Resources and Services Administration
to develop a cultural competence video teaching module. She mantains an active family medicine
practice to include maternitay care at the UPMC Matilda Theiss Clinic. Her research interests
include maternal child health and fitness and evaluating cultural competence in clinicians and trainees.
