Robert W. Smith, M.D., MBA

Vice Chair for Education
Dr. Robert W. Smith is an Assistant Professor and Vice Chair of Education in the Department of
Family Medicine. He practices in the University of Pittsburgh Physicians (UPP) medical group
and is on the staffs of UPMC Presbyterian, UPMC Shadyside, UPMC Braddock, and UPMC
McKeesport. Dr. Smith has been the Associate Director of Undergraduate Education and assumed
the role of Vice Chair of Education in September, 2005. He is responsible for overseeing
several Undergraduate Medical Education programs for the Department, including the required
Family Medicine Third-Year Clerkship.
Dr. Smith is a graduate of the University of Southern California with a B.A. in Psychology (cum laude) and a
M.D. from the University of California, Irvine College of Medicine. He completed his residency training while on
active duty in the U.S. Navy, at the Naval Regional Medical Center, Camp Pendleton, California. Dr. Smith
completed a Graduate Extension Certificate in Executive Medical Management through the extension program
at the Graduate School of Management at the University of California, Irvine. He also holds a Masters in Business Administration (M.B.A.) from the Keller Graduate School of
Management of DeVry University (with distinction). Dr. Smith’s interests
include health care economics, service to the developmentally challenged,
and health disparities in underserved populations.
