Mary Patricia Nowalk, Ph.D., RD
Research Associate
Mary Patricia Nowalk, Ph.D., RD is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department
of Family Medicine. She has been with the department since June 2000. She earned her doctoral degree in chronic
disease epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public
Health in 1993. Dr. Nowalk began working at the University of Pittsburgh in 1979,
holding a variety of positions across a spectrum of research topics. She served
as the project coordinator for several behavioral weight control programs for
adults with Type II diabetes. Following her doctoral studies she worked as a
nutrition and statistical consultant in the Department of Epidemiology for the
Modification of Diet in Renal Disease Study and the Epidemiology of Diabetes
Complications Study. Her current work for the department is with the Immunization
Research Group where she is coordinating the implementation of the adult
pneumococcal vaccine project at the UPMC community hospitals. Dr. Nowalk
is a member of the board of directors of the Senior Companion
Program and the Alzheimer's Association.
