Donald B. Middleton, M.D.
Professor
Donald B. Middleton, M.D. served as the Interim Chair of the Department of Family Medicine
from March 1998 through June 2001. He has been a volunteer faculty member with the department
since 1979. As an AOA graduate of the University of Rochester School of Medicine, he
completed residencies in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of North
Carolina and is board certified in both specialties. He also holds a Certificate of Added
Qualification in Geriatrics and has been a recipient of the Kenneth E. Schuitt Dean's
Award for Master Educator from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr.
Middleton joined the UPMC St. Margaret faculty in 1978 and served as the Family Practice
Residency director from 1987 to 1998. As a member of the American Academy of Family
Physicians and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, he is actively involved with
numerous educational efforts of the AAFP and the American Board of Family Practice. He is
a perennial speaker at the annual AAFP Scientific Convention and is co-director of the annual
AAFP course in Infant, Child and Adolescent Medicine. An Active private practice supplements his academic
knowledge with practical skills. His major areas of clinical interest include care of the newborn,
infectious disease, allergic disorders, and neurologic problems including seizures and attention
deficit disorders. Dr. Middleton has authored numerous textbook chapters and scientific articles.
