Charles W. Mackett III, M.D.

Executive Vice Chair
Dr. Charles W. Mackett is an Associate Professor and is the Executive
Vice Chair of Family Medicine, joining the department in
2005. Dr. Mackett is Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee
of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Disaster
Management Center and is a member of UPMC’s Avian Influenza
Task Force. He currently serves on the UPMC Graduate
Medical Education Committee and the University of Pittsburgh
Physicians Clinical Operations Committee.
Additionally, Dr. Mackett belongs to several professional societies including the World Organization of National
Congresses, Associations and Academies of Family Physicians (WONCA); the American Academy of
Family Physicians, where he has served as Chairman of the Scientific Program Committee, and as a Delegate
to the Annual Congress of Delegates. He is also a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor
Society, American College of Sports Medicine, Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians, Uniformed Services
Academy of Family Physicians, Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, and the Air Force Association.
Dr. Mackett graduated from the University of Notre Dame, cum laude, with a Bachelor of Science degree in
1978. He was awarded a M.D. in 1982 from the State University of New York Health Science Center at Syracuse.
He served as a family medicine resident from 1982–1985 and as chief resident from 1984–1985 at
David Grant U.S. Air Force Medical Center, Travis Air Force Base (CA)—affiliated with the University of California
at Davis Medical Center. Dr. Mackett completed his Family Practice faculty development fellowship at University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine in 1990 and earned his certificate of added qualification
in Geriatrics in 1992. He became a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians in 1994.
