No current system exists that allows one to determine severity of illness in infants and childern requiring interfacility transport. The most critically ill or injured children may have a significant chance of experiencing unplanned events or requiring major interventions during the transport process. We propose development of a clinical model for determining severity of illness in critically ill infants and childern requiring interfacility transport. Such a model could be used for systems evaluation, that is, for comparison between different types of transport systems, and perhaps a triage mechanism to effect more appropriate use of transport resources.
