CMDA Scholarship Fund

The purpose of this scholarship fund shall be to provide assistance to student members of the University of Pittsburgh Chapter of The Christian Medical Dental Association (CMDA), who wish to take part of their education abroad. Preference will be given to those individuals desiring to spend time in a developing country, and especially those students who wish to take this training at a Christian mission hospital.

The maximum amount of scholarship to be awarded each year will depend on the investment proceeds of the scholarship fund and in no case shall the principal of the fund be decreased. The scholarship may be given to one individual or to a group of individuals depending on the pool of applicants and the money available. Recipients of scholarship funds may be in any year of medical or dental training.

This fund was initially established in 1999 by Dr. William Markle, within the University of Pittsburgh Family Medicine Department. It resides at the Christian Ministries Foundation in Brunswick, GA, w hich manages the fund, collects donations, makes any required reports and furnishes the funds upon request. One scholarship has been awarded each year since 2000. The Christian Ministries Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public, nonprofit corporation and gifts are fully tax deductible. When requested, funds are furnished directly to the University of Pittsburgh, either the School of Medicine Office of Financial Aid or the Office of Student Affairs, for disbursement to the scholarship recipient. Donations may be made at the address below.

Members of the University of Pittsburgh Chapter of CMDA who wish to apply for scholarship assistance should supply the information requested on the application form and submit it in writing to Dr. William Markle or his designee. Applications should be made at least three months before the student is to leave for the overseas assignment. Awards will generally be made by Dr. Markle, but he may enlist the aid of other members of the graduate CMDA chapter in making these determinations. In the event Dr. Markle is unable to choose a scholarship recipient, this duty will rest with the officers of the graduate CMDA chapter in Pittsburgh, or if the chapter is not functioning, with the faculty advisor to the student CMDA chapter.

Criteria for awarding the scholarship will include, but are not limited to: Christian maturity and leadership within the CMDA chapter, desire for future medical missionary service, elective planned in a developing country of need, elective planned in a Christian hospital, opportunities for ministry and financial need.
