Advisory Council on Instructional Excellence Meeting

June 1, 2009

826 Cathedral of Learning

Present: A. Blair (Chair), R. Brand, P, Brusilovsky, J. Camillus, T. Derricotte, N. Day, S. Engberg, J. Erlen, P. Gupta, K. Kearns, M. Ripoll, C. Singh, M. Smith, and C. Wilcox.

Approval of Minutes (A.Blair):

Dr. Blair asked for a motion to approve the May 6, 2009 meeting minutes.  A motion was made and seconded, and approved; minutes will be posted to the ACIE website.

Report of the Chair (A.Blair):

As this is the final meeting of the Advisory Council for the academic year, Dr. Blair thanked the following members whose terms are expiring for their service and acknowledged their contributions to Council over the past several years:  Ron Brand, John Camillus, Toi Derricotte, Kevin Kearns, Chandra Singh, and Margaret Smith.  He also informed the group of the appointment of Ms. Cynthia Golden, who has been selected to succeed Diane Davis as Director of CIDDE, and as Staff Liaison to the Council.

Report of the Faculty Development Committee (K. Kearns, Chair):

The major discussion item for the committee was the statistical summary of the May 1 SIDI seminar on Critical Thinking and how to further promote the SIDI seminar sessions next year.  In general, there was a good turnout of attendees and the comments of the faculty attendees  were generally positive, particularly with regard to the faculty presentations.  Prof. Kearns noted in the comments how much the faculty appreciated CIDDE.  The committee may want to think about topics and look at what has been done in the past and build on these in planning future SIDI seminars.

A copy of the final report on the New Faculty Focus Groups sessions, held in late February and early March, was distributed; and Dr. Blair informed the Council that this had been sent to all deans and chairs as recommended in May.

Report of the Best Practices Committee (C. Singh, Chair):

The Best Practices Committee had nothing new to report, but Prof. Singh noted that the final report on CIDDE’s testing services is still being fine-tuned by CIDDE.

With no further business, the Advisory Council adjourned at 1:00 pm.
