Advisory Council on Instructional Excellence Meeting

September 11, 2008

826 Cathedral of Learning

A. Blair (Chair),  R. Brand, P. Brusilovsky, K. Kearns, J. McGrath, C. Newhill, C. Singh, M. Smith, D. Steed, C. Wilcox, and D. Davis (Staff Liaison); and Provost J. Maher

Welcome and Introduction of Members (A. Blair):

Dr. Blair welcomed new and continuing members of the Advisory Council, noting that about one-third of Council is new.  He then introduced Provost James Maher, who gave Council its charge for the academic year (2008-09).

Provost’s Charge to Council (J. Maher):

Provost Maher gave a brief history of the creation of the Advisory Council, noting that its main agenda is to advise the Provost on the means to encourage instructional development and teaching excellence at the University of Pittsburgh; to oversee the Innovation in Education Awards program; and to advise the Center for Instructional Development and Distance Education (CIDDE) which sponsors programs and provides assistance to faculty to enhance teaching.

In his charge, Provost Maher asked Council to continue its ongoing reflection and review of what is being made available to faculty through CIDDE programs and workshops.  Provost Maher noted that instructional technology has helped in getting faculty engaged in teaching, in particular, the use of Blackboard.  He also encouraged Council to continue to review the outcomes of the grants program and to use the information to further encourage faculty to submit proposals, as well as fine-tuning the RFP and the review process as necessary.

In closing, Provost Maher encouraged members to continue the Council’s aggressive agenda for pursuing instructional excellence at the University of Pittsburgh.  (Provost Maher then left the meeting.)

Approval of the Minutes (A. Blair):

Dr. Blair next asked for a motion from continuing Council members for approval of the June 5, 2008 meeting minutes, which was offered, seconded, and accepted as written.  The minutes will be posted to the ACIE website.

Council Committees and Membership (A. Blair):

Council received a list of the three Advisory Council committees (Faculty Development; Best Practices Implementation, and Instructional Grants) along with the statements on the responsibilities of the Best Practices and Faculty Development Committees.  Dr. Blair noted that there are two regularly-meeting standing committees, each composed of half of the Council membership, with the third committee, Instructional Grants, composed of the whole Council, since it is the full membership that participates in the review of proposals and approves the content of the RFP.  He then asked new members to select a committee on which they would like to serve.  Dr. Blair noted that Dr. Davis and her staff coordinate the Best Practices and Faculty Development monthly committee meetings.  Committees report on their activities at full Council meetings and also provide agenda items for full Council discussion.

Dr. Blair added that a revised Draft RFP will be sent to Council members for its information.  This draft will include suggestions made by members last year at its proposal review debriefing session.

Teaching Excellence Fair (D. Davis):

Dr. Davis encouraged Council members to attend the November 5 Fair to observe the presentations of the projects funded last year and to respond to questions from participants about the awards program. One continuing member was eager to discuss how to engage more people to attend the Fair, and suggested that faculty with nationally-funded grants might be invited to make a presentation at this event as well.  Dr. Blair suggested that the member and Dr. Davis might work together and prepare a proposal for Council’s consideration at its October meeting.

With no further business, the Advisory Council adjourned at 11:00 am.  The next Council meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 13, 3:00 pm, 826 CL.
