Advisory Council on Instructional Excellence Meeting

Date: Monday, May 21, 2001
Time: 2:00-3:00 pm
Location: Room 826 CL
Minutes
Present: A. Blair (Chair), K. Brown, J. Manfredi, T. Metzger, D, Moser, D. Wilkins, D. Davis (Staff Resource), and B. Walker (CIDDE Staff)
Handouts: ACIE Planning and Benchmarking Committee Meeting Minutes, May 8, 2001; and Benchmarking Comparison Institutions

1. Approval of the April 17, 2001 Meeting Minutes:
Minutes were distributed prior to themeeting for members’ review and subsequently were approved by members present.

2. Other Business:
Dr. Diane Davis and Mr. Blaine Walker (CIDDE) presented a sample of posters which could be produced for Innovation in Education 2000 project directors for their poster sessions at the Fall Teaching Excellence Conference. Cost estimates for a poster, mounting, and labor were also presented. Everyone agreed that this is a good idea, but commented that some project directors may want to use other means for presenting the results of their funded projects. Dr. Davis also suggested that each presenter should conduct at least three sessions, with several project presentations occurring simultaneously.

3. Report of the Chair:
Dr. Blair informed Council that he had received a letter from an unfunded project director regarding the evaluative comments received on the project. As a reminder for future reviews, we must be more cautious about what is written in proposal evaluations that may be misconstrued by the project director.

4. Report of the Planning and Benchmarking Committee Chair:
Professor Keith Brown asked Council members present for their suggestions for conducting a benchmarking exercise of selected aspects of instructional support and encouragement of teaching excellence: the dimensions that should be benchmarked; the universities that will best serve as useful comparisons; and the criteria used for benchmarking. The ACIE Planning and Benchmarking Committee had identified the following areas: (1) Recognition of Teaching, Excellence (for example, awards programs) (2) Extent of Classroom Resources, (e.g., technology, classroom needs and maintenance), (3) Faculty Development Issues (such as course development grants, mentoring/improving teaching, active learning strategies), and (4) Organization/Structure (i.e., specific unit that is responsible for providing these services). Council members concurred that these were good topics. Regarding institutions, Dr. Davis distributed a spreadsheet listing 15 suggested institutions with accompanying data. After some discussion, Council members approved ten institutions for benchmarking: Michigan State, Ohio State, UCLA, University of Maryland, University of Michigan, University of Minnesota, University of Southern California, University of Washington, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the University of North Carolina. The benchmarking effort will be coordinated by CIDDE staff.

5. Adjournment:
The meeting was adjourned at 3:30pm.
