Using predetermined style conventions set forth by the University of Pittsburgh, such as color and required graphics and links, Richard was able to design and construct this website to give an appealing stage for the Ethnology message, while still maintaining its individuality within the University of Pittsburgh.

Some interesting elements are present in this particular project:

  • The use of iframes is prevalent on every page.
  • One single Cascading Style Sheet is used for the entire website and contains well over 3 dozen classes.
  • Three unique original JavaScripts were developed and are closely guarded secrets of the designer.
    • Dynamically adjust each iframe based on the source page length requirement.
    • Automatically re-route sub-pages back to the home page in the event a search engine provides a direct link to the iframe content.
    • The third serves a purpose of an undisclosed nature.
  • The color scheme within the interactive portion of the website was developed by Richard based on the cover of the journal Ethnology.
  • Eight original graphics are present in order to enhance the overall appeal of the website and to convey the journal's cover.
  • One of these graphics is the icon visible in the address bar. The others' location and purpose are closely guarded secrets of the designer.

The project began on 26 February 2007, with completion on 5 March 2007.

During the initial construction phase of the website, several graphics were designed and many test pages constructed; these variations on a theme were presented to the editor-in-chief of Ethnology and to the Managing Editor, Katherine A. Lancaster for approval.

While much of the content text is the work of the Managing Editor, the implementation and final web deployment was the responsibility of Richard.

Final approval of the design and construction culminated with an hour long presentation to the editor-in-chief on 5 March 2007, which ultimately ended with their resounding approval and accolades to the designer and Managing Editor.
