Type 1 Diabetes Epidemiology and Etiology Introduction
This project is designed to provide students with the opportunity to participate in basic field experiences in epidemiological research and to collect data which examine the role of environmental and genetic factors in the development of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) in the study populations.
Background
A number of factors, including genetic and environmental, have been implicated in the etiology of childhood IDDM. Variation in these factors may influence the frequency of the disease in various populations. As part of the Caribbean African Heritage IDDM study, we have determined the incidence of IDDM in many Caribbean populations by establishing diabetes registries. In addition, we have studied both the genetic and environmental etiology of the disease. These research initiatives will form the basis for the field experiences the student will have as part of this project. The center of operation for this project will be Barbados, however, students can expect to travel to other islands to conduct research.
Data Collected
Students can expect to participate in the development or update of a childhood diabetes registry. This involves collection of the following information on individuals who develop diabetes in childhood.
Demographics
Family History of Diabetes
Diagnostic Symptoms
Medication Use
Students might also participate in the collection of information on IDDM risk factors including:
Genetic/Racial Background
Infant Feeding Practices Responsibilities
Each student will be required to complete a weekly summary report of his/her activities. The progress of the overall project and of each student will be discussed at weekly meetings with faculty. A jointly prepared abstract of the project is required at the end of the training experience.
