  This lecture is designed to introduce the reader to the multidisciplinary nature of the highway safety field and the research traditions that have formed the foundation of this field. This lecture will outline the disciplines that have a role to play in highway safety programs, where responsibility lies for highway safety, and overview specific research approaches used in highway safety..


  On completion of the lecture, readers will be able to:

  • Identify the disciplines with an interest in highway safety
  • Understand the current environment which shapes the emphasis placed on highway safety
  • Identify the five predominant research traditions in highway safety
