Outstanding Student
Presentation Award (Hydrology Section, American Geophysical Union) Marion T. Sikora, a M.S. Candidate in the Department of Geology and Planetary Sciences, received an Outstanding Student Paper Award by the Hydrology Section of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) for her presentation at the 2008 Fall Meeting in San Francisco. Her presentation, titled “Nutrient input and dynamics in a restored urban stream impacted by mixed sewer systems”, examined water quality and nutrient contamination in Nine Mile Run, a restored urban stream in Frick Park, Pittsburgh, PA. Her results highlight the importance of examining the role of aging sewer infrastructure in water quality degradation, in addition to the impacts of combined sewer overflows. The AGU Outstanding Student Paper Awards program recognizes the best of a strong group of students who present at annual AGU meetings and are typically within the top three to five percentile. Ms. Sikora is advised by Dr. Emily M. Elliott (Department of Geology and Planetary Science) and Dr. Dan Bain was a co-author on the presentation, both are faculty in the Department of Geology and Planetary Science. December 20, 2008 |

Exceptional merit award for graduate student (Geological Society of America) Katherine Middlecamp, a M.S. candidate in the Department of Geology and Planetary Sciences, received a Graduate Student Research Grant from the Geological Society of America (GSA) totaling $4,000. Her proposal entitled, “Isotopic investigation of anthropogenic sources of carbon and nitrogen to vegetation along an urban to rural gradient” was selected by the GSA as Outstanding Mention for "exceptionally high merit in conception and presentation." Of the 570 proposals received by GSA, 320 were awarded grants, and only 20 of those were selected for Outstanding Mention. March 15, 2008 |
