Facilities

 

Major instrumentation:

  • University of Pittsburgh, Mobile Air Quality Research Laboratory (coming soon!)

 

Dedicated wet chemistry and storage facilities for Biogeochemistry research:

  • Biogeochemistry lab (600 ft2) housing a  8' fume hood and a 6' HF-grade fume hood, autoclave, and multiple centrifuges for pollen extractions and isotopic sample preparation.  This lab also houses a gamma spectrometer for measurement of gamma-emitting radio-isotopes including 137Cs and 210Pb.

  • Walk-in freezer and cooler (200 ft2) for sample storage.

  • A shared sediment core processing lab (800 ft2) featuring a walk-in cold room, automated magnetic susceptibility track with a Bartington Susceptibility meter, muffle furnaces, and drying ovens.

  • A shared microanalysis lab (200 ft2) for pollen and diatom counting and identification.  Leica microscope with digital camera.

Other facilities in the Department of Geology & Planetary Science:
  • GV Instruments (Micromass) IsoPrime™ stable isotope ratio mass spectrometer with universal triple collector and additional H/D assembly.  The instrument is equipped with both traditional dual inlet and high throughput continuous flow modes.  The system includes a Multi-Prep™ inlet module and Gilson autosampler for high precision determinations of carbonate d18O and d13C and water sample d18O and D/H ratios (in the lab of Mike Rosenmeier).
  • Finnigan MAT 262 Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometer (TIMS) with eight faraday collectors (seven movable, including high mass cup fixed at 208Pb-207Pb position) and a RPQ+ high abundance sensitivity device (in the labs of Rosemary Capo and Brian Stewart)
  • Spectroflame Modula (FTM 08) axial inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES) for major and trace element analysis.  The instrument is equipped with an end-on plasma option, UV monochromator (160-480 nm) for sequential elemental analysis, a 7-channel polychromator for simultaneous analysis of alkalis (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs), internal standard and background corrections (Sc, Ar), and a Merchantek Nd-YAG laser ablation accessory for in situ analyses (in the labs of Rosemary Capo and Brian Stewart).
  • Dionex ASE100 Accelerated Solvent Extractor for rapid Soxhlet-type extractions of organic materials (in the lab of Daniel Bain).
