From the perspective of Indo-European poetics, this presentation investigates two textual problems in Sappho. Naturally, establishment of the correct text leads to a better understanding of both passages.
Vedic sravah ... aksitam "imperishable fame" has primarily been appealed to, in discussion of Sappho's use of kleos aphthiton, in connection with meter. Additionally, rathinir "drawn by wagons" at Rig-Veda 1.9.8 supports the restoration of elan "to drive" (or the compound pedelan) in fr. 44.4.
In fr. 96.8, the parchment originally had MHN (i.e., neither mena nor Schubart's restoration selanna). As in Rig-Veda 10.127, there is a transfer of phraseology from Dawn to Nightfall. Sappho uses a brododaktulos of evening twilight, and te ko should be supplied before men "moon".
