Ways of describing a translation

Three different ways of describing a translation were categorized in class, Jan. 24 in terms of "Words", "Style", and "Genre". These could be thought of as three intersecting axes, perpendicular to one another. The first category ("Words") was discussed as ranging from "literal" to "free", the second category ("Style") as ranging from "archaic" to "colloquial", and the third category ("Genre") as ranging from "prosaic" to "poetic".
