Notes on translations of Aeschylus, Prometheus Bound

Besides the 1932 George Thomson translation of Aeschylus, Prometheus Bound, reprinted in the Dover edition, there is also a 1965 revision by Thomson, from which H & P cite excerpts, pp. 133-142. Actually, the "revision" is so extensive as to constitute a virtually new translation. See for example Prometheus' speech in Thomson (Dover edition), p. 10 ("Painful it is ....) and H & P, p. 132 ("To speak is painful ...").

Many other translations of Prometheus Bound are available, including several on-line. Some attention will be devoted in class, both in January and in March, to a somewhat avant-garde and/or colloquial translation by "Tim Rollins and K.O.S. (Kids of Survival)".

In this translation, H&P's lines 6-40 are found at the beginning of Section 4 of the Rollins / K.O.S. translation. (Also, more of the Rollins / K.O.S. translation, corresponding to pp. 1-18 [middle] in the Dover edition of Prometheus Bound, is available on the web.)
