Engineering Applications for Society 0715

Daniela Aizpitarte

Hello, my name is Daniela Aizpitarte, and I am a Biomedical Engineering student at Pitt. When I was researching for colleges online, I found that Pitt has a great engineering program in an urban setting. I applied, and the rest is history. Engineering is a pretty demanding discipline, but I enjoy my classes and the work I have to do. Now that I’m here, I think I made a good choice. I have fallen in love with Pittsburgh, and hope to experience more of it during my time here with the free bus passes.

Pittsburgh and my hometown are proving to be polar opposites, but I love them both for what they have to offer me. I grew up in Eagle, Idaho, in a small suburb twenty minutes outside Boise. My grandparents along with thousands of other Basque people migrated to Boise during the civil war. Because of this I grew up in a tight Basque community, where I learned everything there is to know about Basque culture, except for the language.

I started snowboarding three years ago, mainly because it is a very popular sport in Idaho and there are world famous ski resorts. Unfortunately I’ve discovered that there are no comparable mountains in the east. I went to New York to visit a friend over Thanksgiving break, and I couldn’t even tell when we crossed the Appalachians. However snowboarding is a big incentive to return to the west for the winters.

I am a proud Idahoan, and always appreciate a person who knows where Idaho is located. Also for the record, I did not grow up on a potato farm, I don’t know anyone who did, and I don’t know where any are located.

Team 13: Partnered With UPMC Artificial Heart Program

Team Project

Patient Transport Analysis

This team will perform a patient transport analysis to facilitate transport of cardiac support patients. This team will measure all available transport elevators at UPMC as well as any potential transport bed, cardiac support device, and other potential equipment. The team will then develop a method for quickly and effectively allowing transport personnel to make use of the data to choose the best transport route for their patient.
