I. Time change.
Agreed to change regular meeting time to the fourth Tuesday of the month. Meetings this semester will be held on Oct 24 and Nov 28.
II. Service Learning recommendations accepted.
Tracy Soska and Wes Rohr, representing the Community Engagement Subcommittee of the Senate Community Relations Committee, presented their work on developing standards for Service Learning. Standards can be found in the report, and include, among other things: 1) distinguishing volunteerism from service learning, 2) ensuring that academic benefits, such as curricular goals or research results, can be clarified for each Service Learning experience.
It is expected that the proposed standards will serve as a model for Deans and Department heads who would like to enhance emphasis on the value of service learning in faculty evaluations.
The Community Engagement subcommittee also proposes that the university undertake the documentation necessary to seek the "Community Engagement Elective Classification" from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, one of the entities that contributes to universities' standings and classifications (e.g., as "Research I"), and rankings, including the US News and World Reports ranking.
The SEPC voted to support the report and recommendations of the Community Engagement Subcommittee.
III. Coping with cheating and plagiarism will be a topic focus for the SEPC.
The committee agreed to examine and disseminate information about how to handle plagiarism and cheating in the classroom, and to explore new research on generational differences affecting many teachers in university settings.
