Attending: Dr. Tom Metzger, Chair; Ms. Eileen Baylis; Dr. Catherine M. Bender; Dr. David M. Crossman; Dr. Kerry W. Holzworth; Dr. Susan Neuman; Mr. Jason Palmer; and Dr. Anthony Silvestre

Report of the Chair

Dr. Metzger reported that the Planning and Budget Committee would be meeting on May 18, 2000. He expected that the Committee would recommend a 4% tuition increase.

He also reported that the Teaching Excellence Committee was reviewing its process of making awards for teaching excellence. He expects that changes in the process will be made to improve the process. The amount for awards is expected to remain at the $200,000 level.


Election of a Chair

Dr. Holzworth nominated Dr. Metzger for reelection as chair. Ms. Baylis seconded the nomination. Dr. Crossman nominated Dr. Silvestre who declined the nomination. No other nominations were made and Dr. Metzger was reelected by acclamation. This action confirmed the unofficial vote of the last meeting.


2000-2001 Agenda

The Committee discussed issues that the Committee is interested in for the 2000-2001 academic year. The following were identified.

An inquiry into how departments and programs use teaching evaluations.
Gathering and analyzing data on the characteristics of faculty who use CIDDE services and attending their programs.
Gathering information about the Universityís accommodation of diverse students. Concerns were raised about students with disabilities, racial and ethnic minority students, international students, and older returning students. Input will be sought from student groups, administrators and others.
Continued inquiry and discussion about the roles and needs of part-time faculty. Concerns about support of these faculty, their integration into departments, and their accessibility were discussed.

Minutes

The minutes of the April meeting were reviewed and approved. The minutes for February and March will be circulated by email for review and approval. Dr. Crossman will add the minutes to our webpage as they are approved.

Future Meeting times


The Committee will meet on September 12, 2000 from noon to 1:30 in Room 637 WPU. At that time, other meeting dates and times will be chosen.
