2) New Business
a) A total of 26 proposals for innovative teaching are currently being reviewed and will be considered on March 15, 2003 for funding. There does not appear to be as m any proposals as in previous years. It was thought that perhaps there are more internal educational grants available. Some Schools have their own proposals for grants.
b). The University of Pittsburgh Faculty diversity seminar will be held May 12-13, 20003 and is sponsored by the Officie of the Provost. This two-week course redesign experience provides faculty with an opportunity to learn about diversity issues while allowing the faculty member to make it more inclusive in terms of gender and race. The member will work with colleagues who have experience in diversity and course revision. This year's topic concerns tools to increase exposure of issues related to diversity in class curricula. These include examples of differences with regard to outcome/attitude abased on social class, ability, sex, age, social justice and inclusiveness. Dr. Aaron had attended the class previously and reported that she found it very beneficial. She indicated that some of the most valuable aspects of the lass were the interchange of various disciplines.
c). The University is supporting the University of Michigan's ruling on affirmative action. As a committee, the SEPC wanted to add their strong support for this action. There was a motion by Dave Crossman and a second by Ellen Baylis to formalize this view regarding affirmative action.
