ENGR 0715: Engineering Applications for Society

Dan Maskarinec

I am from King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, which is approximately twenty-five miles outside of Philadelphia. Anyone familiar with my hometown knows it as the location of America's second largest shopping mall (first in terms of retail space). I graduated from Upper Merion High School where I was a member of the varsity tennis team during my senior year. I also played hockey competively for thirteen years before coming to Pitt. Now I enjoy throwing around a Frisbee and playing ultimate in my free time. As most other students in the class I was attracted to engineering becasue of my strengths in the subjects of math and the sciences. I came to Pitt intending on majoring in bioengineering, for which I will declare at the end of this spring semester. Bioengineering has peaked my interest because of its incorporation of math along with all of the sciences. I did a research project in my freshman year of high school for biology where I explored brain control of artificial prostheses. I was amazed by so many things like our ability to implant a chip into the brain of a monkey which then allows that monkey to do such tasks as moving a cursor on a computer by just thinking. I hope to focus on the chemical aspects of bioengineering and my future goals include attending graduate school where I plan to get my doctorate. My goal is to work in research either for a private company or at a university.

Team Project - Analysis of Aliquippa Place Housing Facility

The OPDC has recently purchased a housing facility located in North Oakland. This facility is required to abide by the American's With Disabilities Act (ADA). Our team's job is to inspect the facility and analyze it with respect to the ADA making certain that the facility meets all the regulations specified in the ADA. We must then summarize our findings which we will submit to the OPDC along with recommended solutions to anything in violation of the ADA.
