Biography
Elodie Ghedin, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases since May 2006. She earned her B.S. and Ph.D. from McGill University in Canada and was a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) (1998-2000).
The underlying theme in Dr. Ghedin’s research is the genomics of infectious diseases. She has worked on the causative agents for African sleeping sickness, Chagas disease, cutaneous and visceral leishmaniases, and lymphatic filariasis. During her time at The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR) Dr. Ghedin led the Viral Genomics group, working on the design of high throughput pipelines for virus discovery and characterization. Her laboratory was the first to produce an efficient and rapid workflow for the systematic decoding of complete influenza genomes. Ongoing projects in Dr. Ghedin’s laboratory include virus detection in juvenile-onset diabetes patients, gene structure characterization in a parasitic nematode (Brugia malayi), the evolution of retrotransposons in trypanosomatid parasites and the study of drug resistance evolution in influenza. Dr. Ghedin maintains an Adjunct Investigator position at TIGR where she spent the last 6 years.
