An Overview of the Division:
- Research Activities - A major activity of the Infectious Diseases Division is laboratory and clinical research. These activities are grouped into specific "units" led by a senior investigator. Units within the Division include Epidemiology, Infection Control, Antibiotic Management, Special Pathogens, Geriatric Infectious Diseases, HIV/AIDS, Viral Diseases, Transplant Infectious Diseases, and Surgical Infectious Diseases. Post doctoral research positions are available in our various Division laboratories. For more information on Division research activities, please click here.
- Clinical Activities - The Infectious Diseases consult service is the major clinical activity of the Division. Rounding teams conduct Infectious Diseases consults at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Presbyterian - Montefiore Hospitals, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), and at UPMC Shadyside. In addition, consults are conducted at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC) and Magee Women's Hospital. In 2002-3, approximately 1,907 initial inpatient consults and 4,801 follow-up visits were conducted at UPMC-Presbyterian alone.
- Patients requiring outpatient consults and follow-up visits are seen in the Infectious Diseases Clinic on Fridays in the Falk Medical Building. These patients often have resolving acute infectious diseases such as osteomyelitis, and chronic infections such as tuberculosis. Faculty and fellows evaluate patients in the outpatient clinic on a rotating basis. Medical residents rounding on the Infectious Diseases consultation service also participate in the outpatient clinic.
- The UPMC HIV/AIDS Program provides primary care to approximately 1,000 HIV-infected persons from the tri-state area. Infectious Diseases faculty members and fellows evaluate outpatients, take night call, and provide weekend coverage for the HIV Program.
- Teaching Activities - Division faculty members participate in the University of Pittsburgh's continuing education outreach programs on AIDS, antimicrobial therapy, and nosocomial infections.
