Hello, welcome to my webpage, my name is Dan Smilowitz. I was born and raised in Huntington, New York. Huntington is a beautiful and diverse community located on the north shore of Long Island. I attended Huntington High School where I developed an interest in math and science. These interests led me to the field of engineering. I am currently a freshman engineering student at the University of Pittsburgh. I am extremely pleased with my choice to attend the University of Pittsburgh. It took me a while to get adjusted to life here but now I love it. The beginning of my freshman year was tough, the course load was much more intense than I had anticipated. Also, I found it tough coming into a place and not knowing a single person. However, throughout the first semester I have become very close with the guys on my floor. I live in the SPACE freshman engineering community so almost everyone on my floor is an engineer. Living on SPACE has been extremely beneficial because it means that all my best friends and neighbors make up an awesome support web for my classes. As far as engineering goes, I have learned a lot about the field since I have been here. When I came to school, I was sure that I wanted to be a computer engineer. I quickly realized that computer engineering was not the place for me. When I heard about the new sustainability program within civil engineering, I knew that's what I wanted to do. I have continued to become more interested in the idea of sustainable engineering and I am excited to start learning about it as soon as possible. I am also excited about this course and the project it involves. I hope to gain valuable engineering experience and see what problem solving is like in the real world.
