THEATRE ARTS 1359

Contemporary Theatre: Korean Theatre

Tuesdays & Thursdays 12:30 – 2:00

Instructor: Insoo Lee, Ph.D. Student, Theatre Arts Department

To some people, Korea is just a faraway country somewhere in Asia. However, lots and lots of exciting theatre activities have been going on for hundreds of years in Korea. Contemporary Theatre: Korean Theatre covers major traditional performance forms to recent dramas and theatre productions that are sparkling with creativity and originality. The traditional forms are a treasure island of artistic inspirations and imagination. Contemporary theatre artists endeavor to respond to the current social and cultural issues with their fresh inputs, adapting and re-creating the tradition. Korean theatre is a fascinating way to examine how different cultures intersect with each other and how one culture strives to maintain and develop its originality while accommodating and adopting artistic forms and practices of other cultures.

This course doesn’t require pre-knowledge in Korean language. The instructor, as a person with a first-hand experience in Korean culture, will provide vivid and in-depth knowledge. This class is a one-time only class, so don’t miss this great opportunity!

If you have any questions, please contact Insoo Lee at INL6@pitt.edu.
