Japanese Courses

0001 First Year Japanese 1

TH 11-11:50; daily 50-minute recitations starting at 9:00, 10:00, noon, 2:00, 3:00, and 4:00

1. The first step in Japanese language study -- no prior study is expected. The goal is to acquire basic competence in speaking, understanding, reading and writing, with emphasis on speaking and understanding first. In addition to learning everyday conversation, using basic vocabulary items, and essential sentence patterns, the student will learn to read and write the kana syllabaries.

2. Prerequisites: None

3. Students register for both lecture and recitation—two hours of lecture and five hours of recitation per week. The recitations are taught entirely in Japanese by native Japanese speakers, and are designed to provide further practice and reinforcement of material discussed in lecture classes.

4. Class size: Lecture—45; recitation—13 each

5. This course is offered regularly during the fall term. An intensive version (JPNSE 1061) is offered during the summer which also includes JPNSE 0002.
