Chinese Major

The departmental major in Chinese is individually constructed for each student. Specific course selections will, therefore, differ as a reflection of the student’s interests and priorities. In general, programs will comprise the following elements:

  1. MODERN LANGUAGE SKILLS. Completion of Spoken and Reading courses in the Chinese Language Program through Chinese 1006 and 1021.

  2. RELATED AREAS. Completion of a selection of courses, both inside and outside the department, which complement the language acquisition program and are convincingly related to its purposes.

I. THE CHINESE LANGUAGE PROGRAM
(32 credits to be chosen from the following):

IV. Senior Project (3 credits)

Chinese Minor

There are 3 options available:

Option A (23 credits)

1. Two years of Chinese Language (20 credits)

2. One Chinese literature or culture course from EALL (3 credits)

Option B (19 credits)

1. One year of Chinese Language (10 credits)

2. Three China-related courses from EALL, which must include one basic course on traditional Chinese culture (CHIN 1090 "Great Minds of China" or CHIN 1091 "Encountering Modern China" (9 credits)

Option C (18 credits)

A total of six China-related courses. At least four of these courses must be taken in EALL. Two of them may be taken from other departments in China-related courses:

The University of Pittsburgh houses one of a few federally funded Title IV centers for East Asian Studies in the United States.
