Using WAIS servers

The CSNA WAIS-indexed files allow for easy searching of large text files. In order for the World Wide Web programs, such as Mosaic, to access WAIS files, you must specify a WAIS gateway in the configuration file. One such address would be "www.w3.org:8001" but this particular address might be busy, so if you have access to another gateway, you should use that one. Your system administrator should know the appropriate gateway for your site. To set the gateway for X-Mosaic, enter

setenv WWW_wais_GATEWAY=http://www.w3.org:8001/

To set the gateway on Netscape, use the Preferences command. To set the gateway on Mosaic for the Mac, use the Preferences command under the Options menu.

When you click on the WAIS bibliography, you will be asked to enter a search term. In Mosaic for the Mac, the search box at the top will be highlighted. After entering a search term, such as "clustering," you will presented with an ordered list of "hits" with a relevence rating associated with each hit. Click on any hit to get more information about that entry.
