The Israeli Air Force, in Hebrew: 'Heyl Ha'avir', is one of the pillars of Israel's strength. Its feats and accomplishments in wars and other military operations, and its contribution to routine security missions, have brought it international fame. The IAF is a cornerstone of Israel's defensive strategy, providing a defense against aggressive intentions and a solid shield in the event of war. The Israeli Air Force (IAF) of the 21st century is very different from the one that was created on the eve of the War of Independence. The IAF's beginnings are in the establishment of the Sherut Avir, or Air Service, by a small group of pilots operating a handful of outdated planes. Today's IAF - Heyl Ha'avir - is an experienced, war hardened air force, whose operations in wartime and between the wars, in dogfights and strategic attacks, have earned it a place of honor among the world's air forces.
