Dr. McDowell's research focuses on the treatment of urinary incontinence using behavioral therapies including biofeeback. Geriatric issues including cost and effect of common health problems e.g. urinary incontinence, congestive heart failure, cognitive changes, and chronic pulmonary disease.

Dr McDowell's areas of research interests include management of urinary incontinence and other geriatrics syndromes, the cost and effect of treatment, and home care of older patients.

Dr. McDowell received her Nursing Diploma from White Cross Hospital, her B.S. in Nursing from California University, her Nurse Practitoner certificate, her M.S.in Public Health and Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh.
