Dr. Erlen's research focuses on examining the quality of nursing
care that patients with AIDS receive as compared to general hospitalized patients. The phenomena of interest include nurses' fear,
stigma, and professionalism as they relate to the quality of care given and the outcome variables of patient satisfaction and nurse
work satisfaction. She is also examining the use of universal precautions and the
phenomenon of avoidance.

Dr Erlen's interests include ethics in nursing and health with particular emphasis on quality of care, quality of life, and decision making.

Dr. Erlen received her B.S.N. from the University of Pittsburgh, her M.S.N. from Wayne State University, and her Ph. D. in Nursing from Texas Woman's University.

Dr. Erlen's expansion is to describe quality of life of hospitalized patients with AIDS, to determine if there is a relationship between quality of life experienced by hospitalized patients with AIDS and their satisfaction with the nursing care that they receive, and examine the relationship between stage of illness and quality of care in hospitalized patients with AIDS. In addition, she is examining coping, functional ability, and cognitive ability in patients with AIDS dementia complex and the relationship of these phenomena to quality of life.
