Program faculty have an intererest in several different types of clinical populations, including the study of subjects with degenerative memory disorders (e.g., Alzheimer's disease), acquired brain damage (e.g., stroke), and disordered cognition (e.g., schizophrenia and attention-deficit disorder). Typically, the goals of this research are to characterize the cognitive impairments of the affected population, to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms which underlie the damage or disorder, and to relate the findings to models of normal human cognition. For instance, work in Carter's laboratory involves the integration of behavioral and functional brain imaging studies of subjects with schizophrenia, with the goal of testing hypotheses regarding the cognitive and neurobiological underpinnings of attentional deficits in this disease.
