Pain Program FAQs

What is the chronic pain program?

The Clinical Psychology Center has a program to treat children and teenagers who suffer from chronic pain.  We specialize in treating individuals with Reflex Neurovascular Dystrophy (RND; also known as RSD or CRPS).  After working with the Children's Institute to understand their approach to treating children and teens with RND, we have designed an outpatient psychotherapy program to complement the inpatient treatment that your child has received.  The goals of the program are:

  • to reduce your child's pain and suffering

  • to reduce the need for your child to take strong painkilling medications

  • to increase your child's ability to cope with pain so it interferes less with daily activities

Why is it important to incorporate psychotherapy into pain treatment?

Research and clinical experience have shown that the best approach to treating chronic pain in young people involves both traditional medical treatment and psychotherapy focused on pain management techniques.  Chronic pain can be very difficult for a child to deal with and often leads to feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or chronic worry.  Indeed, research has shown that pain is perceived to be worse when accompanied by negative emotions or when the pain is the focus of attention.  Pain management psychotherapy can help your child cope with the pain and reduce the negative emotions that worsen pain.
