Patient Rights and Responsibilities

POLICY:
Students have both rights and responsibilities when receiving care
at the Student Health Center. This policy is designed to ensure that both
providers and students are aware of these rights.
I. Students have the right:
- a. to be treated with
dignity and respect
- b. to privacy
- c. to confidentiality of records
- d. to review medical records with a clinician
- e. to receive copies of your medical records
- f. to be seen within a reasonable amount of time, giving
consideration to emergencies and critical illness
- g. to receive accurate information about diagnosis, treatment, and
prognosis in terms the student can understand
- h. to know the effectiveness and possible side effects of various
forms of treatment
- i. to information about any added costs related to services
provided
- j. to know the names and positions of health care providers
- k. to participate in decisions about care, and to give informed
consent before any procedure is performed
II. Students have the responsibility:
- a. to seek medical attention promptly
- b. to be honest about their medical history
- c. to ask about anything they do not understand
- d. to respect clinic personnel and policies
- e. to follow health advice and medical instructions
- f. to report any significant changes in symptoms or failure to
improve
- g. to keep appointments or cancel in advance
- h. to provide useful feedback about services and policies
- i. to pay for charges incurred
III. A summary of the above rights and responsibilities will
be
printed
on the student health service brochure, which is distributed to students.
