IS Foundations: Opportunities and Risks
Effective use of information technology is a key factor in the survival and success of firms. It is not possible for businesses to operate on a regional, national, or global scale without significant investments in information systems to support their operations and management. Topics such as management of IT supported inter-organizational relationships, support and operation of virtual teams, assessment of IT impacts, and oversight of IS deployment projects, which traditionally were the concern of a limited group of IS professionals, are increasingly of interest to a broader audience of scholars and practitioners. At the same time, the pervasiveness of IS within organizations has brought with it risks. Privacy, security, IS project risk management, information overload, disaster recovery, and data quality are just a few of the issues that have risen to the forefront.
Firms seeking to capitalize on the opportunities created by information technology, while managing the risks, recognize that these issues can only be properly understood by combining technical, behavioral, and economic perspectives. CIST 2006 seeks to build on the foundations that are present in the IS research community by bringing together scholars from each of these perspectives to consider topics such as, but not limited to:
  • Inter-organizational information systems (IOS) and collaboration technologies
  • Data management, information overload, privacy, and information security
  • Role of IT in supply chain management, web services, networking, and mobile communication technologies
  • Knowledge management, information sharing, and intellectual property
  • Outsourcing, utility / grid computing, and application service contracting
  • Business value of IT, IT infrastructure evaluation, IT innovation, and IT governance
  • IT and business strategy, IT capabilities, strategic flexibility, and agility
  • Information goods, economics of information systems, and real options for IT valuation
  • Peer-to-peer (P2P) technologies
  • Software engineering and the management of software development
  • Business-to-business (B2B), business-to-consumer (B2C), and online mercantile processes
  • Role of IT in functional areas – risk assessment (finance), governance (management), and CRM (marketing)
