Internships!

Internships are great.

Internships are a great way to see if you like particular jobs or a particular company and to give a strong (hopefully positive) impression to a potential future employer.

How much credit can I get for an internship?

First, to get any college credit it is essential that

  • You as an intern do "meaningful work" (i.e., the "making copies/making coffee" duties are kept to a minimum);
  • You report to a supervisor;
  • You meet with the supervisor regularly (usually weekly).

The number of credits does not flexibly scale with the total number of hours worked. The following gives you an idea of how much time to commit to:

  • 3 credits = 11 hours/week over 15 weeks = 160 hours total
  • 4 credits = 20 hours/week over 15 weeks = 300 hours total.

In the summer you may well work 40 hours a week for 15 weeks, but the maximum number of credits that we (Collins and Jones) can authorize is four. More than four units puts you in a different category of student.

In addition, Environmental Studies students will have a meeting with Mark Collins and the internship supervisor sometime during the semester; Mr. Collins will set this meeting up.
