Italy is one of the great wonders of the world.  An amazing country with lots of sights to see and things to do, no trip to Europe would be complete without seeing Italy. ..

the perils of pet-sitting
Tuesday, March 11, 2008

One of my best friends has taken to taking the oddest jobs since starting college. They are not all completely strange; in fact, some of them are relatively typical, like waitressing, as she currently does, at a local bar and restaurant...

I still say that I hate cell phones. It makes me feel strange that everybody in the world has to be so connected nowadays, at all times. It’s as if everyone’s just…uncomfortable with solitude, anymore...

little boat, no sail
Friday, February 29, 2008

Since I was a young kid I have always wanted to go to college and get a good education.  For the same amount of my life I have been concerned about money in and ever increasing wave that is now building in to a big stressful monster that I will meet when I graduate...

taking a breather
Wednesday, February 27, 2008

Breaks are a bizarre time in college life. Everybody looks forward to them, and they have (especially spring break) a reputation about them: break is when you’re supposed to let go, go all out, travel somewhere exciting, take a little vacation from your busy school life...

Let's say you're driving down a highway. You're passing all of these road signs. You're passing mile markers, green signs with the name of some city or other lettered in white, billboards for something-or-other. Let's call the city you're approaching Houston...

Saturday, January 26, 2008

The most recent time that I visited New York City was the summer after my senior year of high school. This is strange, because I have a lot of connections to the city: a good friend of mine who now lives in Pittsburgh is from Brooklyn, another close friend recently moved to NYC...

teacher's pet?
Thursday, January 24, 2008

I never thought I would be any teacher’s pet. I’m not that kind of student. At least in high school, it’s the outgoing kid, the class clown, who the teacher tends to buddy up with: somebody who seems a little more needy, shares personal stories...

on not knowing one's way around the globe
Thursday, January 10, 2008

OK, so: I’m not the world’s biggest geography buff. I actually don’t have a problem admitting that. Being homeschooled until tenth grade, I missed those crucial middle years of public schooling during which they teach you most of that general geography stuff. There’s a lot of places I’ve never heard of and even more of whose location I’m completely unsure...

the whys and wherefroms of weight loss
Saturday, January 5, 2008

I used to conform nicely to the stereotype that girls are insecure about the way that they look. Up through freshman year of college or so, I was pretty deep in it. Not only wasn’t I skinny enough or pretty enough, it seemed to me that all of my female friends were. My sister, too. I thought I’d never stop comparing myself to other women. It led to a lot of issues, particularly when it came to relationships. I was always ready to sell myself short...

writers and laptops: my favorite co-dependent relationship
Wednesday, December 26, 2007

I get attached to my computer. I think all writers who work primarily by computer do. You spend a lot of time with the damn thing. You share your secrets with it, and you expect a certain level of integrity from it in return. When your computer crashes, it’s a kind of betrayal.
My old laptop, a

reading one hundred years of solitude in solitude
Monday, December 24, 2007

I actually haven’t really started One Hundred Years of Solitude. I don’t count bookmarking page 5 as making a start.

But I am very solitary at the moment. There is nothing lonelier than Christmas Eve for an American Jew. My apartment feels profoundly empty: the chilliness, the empty rooms, the
