Archaeological study of the development of complex societies in the northern Andes, focusing on the prehispanic chiefdom of Cayambe, highland Ecuador. Alternative strategies such as feasting, debt creation, and ideological manipulation of imported items from the Amazonian basin (Quijos region) were evaluated in order to determine whether they helped elites to build and maintain power. Data from surface collections and test excavations at two sites in the Cayambe area seem to reflect the presence of feasting. The increase through time in the importation of pottery of possible ritual significance from the Quijos region may be an indication of an ideological role for these items. In Spanish.
