9/3/05. Decking. The first horizontal surface. You can think of it as the roof of the basement or the floor of the first floor. There is a layer of wood along the tops of the basement walls, then vertically-oriented flooring, then plywood.
9/13/05. Great Hall Framing. The main bents have been raised (much like a barn raising). An evergreen bough is placed at the top of the construction, for good luck. For the first time, we are looking up at the construction.
9/20/05. First Floor Framing. The straight walls are raised quickly. (The construction is just like a conventional house.) The curved walls take a bit more time.
10/4/05. Second floor decking. The great hall frame is slowly disappearing behind the castle walls. The exterior walls of the first floor are finished, and there is a deck for the second floor.
10/11/05. Second Floor Framing. A temporary drawbridge is in place. The walls are starting to look tall.
10/30/05. Parapets. The second floor walls are now complete. The great hall frame is visible only as a small bit of blue tarp poking up. Simple railing can be seen on the front rampart.
1/16/06. Crenellations. Our first crenellations appeared on the back towers, then the sides of the castle, and finally along the front parapet. The machicolations are now visible hanging out over the front of the castle. Crenellations on the round towers will be added last.
2/28/06. Complete Framing. With the addition of crenellations on both towers, and the staircases on the parapet and front left tower, the exterior framing is complete. Now we need to throw on some stone, get a permanent drawbridge, and landscape the area.
