Research Interests: My main interests are in the history and philosophy of physics, especially the foundations of spacetime and quantum theories. Recently, I have written about supertasks in Malament-Hogarth spacetimes, structural realism about groups, classical time machines, and the early history of gravitation and thermodynamics. I also have general interests in logic, metaphysics, and early analytic philosophy.
Education: I am a
graduate of the University of Washington honors program in Seattle, WA, where I received a B.A. in Philosophy and a B.S. in Mathematics. I joined Pittsburgh HPS in the fall of 2006, and am currently beginning my 3rd year as a PhD student here.
Languages: My native language is English, and I speak fluent French and Spanish. I am also a competent reader of Latin and German.
Life at Pittsburgh: You've got to come here to believe it! History and Philosophy of Science is a wildly vibrant department. Studying here is both challenging and exciting. There are a lot of
opportunities for visitors and for scholars, and a really close-knit graduate community that is fun to hang out with. (The
pictures page to shows a bit of what it's like.)
Blog: SoulPhysics.org. I maintain a blog on the history and philosophy of physics. You'll find a little less formal look at what I'm thinking about there.
