PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

TEACHING:

I supervise student nurses, anesthesiology residents and fellows in pediatric anesthesiology during clinical care of all types of pediatric patients in the operating room at Children's Hospital. This accounts for about 60% of my working hours.

As part of the education of our house staff, I present 30 minute to 60 minute discussions on several areas in pediatric anesthesia. This lecture schedule is repeated every three months. My participation includes the following topics:

Inhalation Anesthetics in Pediatric Patients

Neuromuscular Blocking Agents in Pediatric Anesthesia

Thermoregulation

Malignant Hyperthermia

Retinopathy of Prematurity

Neuromuscular Diseases

Neuromuscular Monitoring in the Operating Room

Management of the Pediatric Trauma Patient

As part of our extended program for senior residents I have presented discussions on the design of clinical studies. Included are such topics as sample size calculations, contrasting results of analysis of variance and regression analysis, an example of time dependent logistic regression, examples of meta-analysis, and the predictive value of a test.

I frequently give 45-60 minute lectures at regional and national meetings of anesthesiologists and CRNAs on similar topics. Since 1986 the titles of these lectures have included:

The Use of Muscle Relaxants in Pediatric Anesthesia

New Neuromuscular Blocking Drugs

Anesthetic Management of Pediatric Trauma Patients

Inhalation Anesthetics in Pediatric Anesthesia

Intravenous Inductions in Pediatric Anesthesia

Pediatric Anesthesia for Recovery Room Nurses

Muscle Relaxants Administered by Infusion

The Pediatric Patient: Pharmacodynamic and Pharmacokinetic Considerations
in Anesthetic Management

Factors Affecting Termination of Neuromuscular Block

Succinylcholine Should Not Be Used in Pediatric Anesthesia

Outpatient Pediatric Anesthesia

Pain in the Neonate

Legal and Ethical Issues in Pediatric Drug Research

The Use of Neuromuscular Blocking Drugs in Patients with Excretory Failure

Masseter Spasm

For several years, I contributed to the basic pharmacology course for second year medical students with two lectures on the Pharmacology of Inhalation Anesthetics and the Kinetics of Inhalation Anesthetics. In September 1994 and 1995 I again contributed an hour long lecture with notes on the subject of general anesthesia to the second year medical student course in neurobiology.
