Course Packets

Dear Faculty member:

The new term is quickly approaching!

It's time to begin assembling your materials for your custom course packets.

If you have never used custom course packets before, we invite you to join the growing number of professors who have liberated their teaching from the limitations of traditional textbooks by utilizing our user-friendly, curriculum-enhancing, one-stop service!

Be sure to have your course packets ready for the first day your class meets - see handy chart below.

And throughout the year, whenever you require copyright clearance on materials for your classes, we are the people to see. For more information about copyright clearance, please contact Ann Schober at The Book Center, aschober@bc.pitt.edu.

Important Information about copyright law

1. Production and/or sale of course materials without the proper acquisition of copyright permissions can place both the University and the individual faculty member at legal risk for violations of Federal copyright law. To prevent any legal concerns, The Book Center's custom course packet manager provides professional copyright clearances for faculty members.

2. Be aware that University of Pittsburgh policy strictly prohibits the sale of any course materials inside the classroom. The Book Center provides one convenient location for your students to purchase their regular texts and your course packets, at the same time.

Copyright info:
  • If your course pack contains any material from another source (pages from journals, books, magazines, newspapers, cartoons, Internet), it requires copyright permission. Even though it is for educational use, and may only be one page, it does not fall under fair use.
  • We will obtain copyright permission for you. Keep in mind that the permissions process may take as long as six weeks. So even if you do not have your originals together, you may send us the copyright information and we can start the process.
  • We will also let you know if any of the permissions are unusually high or delayed. We are committed to keeping the cost of your course pack as low as possible. We also strive to have the course pack on the shelves before classes begin.
