Engineering 715, Engineering Aplications for Society

Brad Harken

I am a freshman engineering student at the University of Pittsburgh. I plan to enroll in the Department of Civil Engineering next year, unless I change my mind. Until I came to school at Pitt, I lived my entire life in Grundy Center, Iowa. My decision to come to Pitt was long and kind of strange, but I am happy here and do not regret my decision at all. In high school I was involved in basketball, tennis, and various other activities. Growing up in Iowa, I wasn't far from the lakes of Minnesota. I have water-skied for almost my entire life, and have in the past couple of years started wakeboarding. I love boating and being on the water.

I enjoy life on the Pitt campus and in the city of Pittsburgh. Although the intense engineering curriculum keeps me busy most of the time, I usually find a little time to get out and enjoy the campus and the city. One of my favorite things to do is attend the Pitt Panther basketball games and sit in the Oakland Zoo.

As for this class, I am looking forward to doing "real" engineering things, as opposed to problems that come from a textbook and don't have much more significance than that. I think it will be exciting to do types of things that I may eventually run into again during a career in civil engineering.
