  Elementary Science Fair Program

Two students at Memorial Elementary take a peek into the microscope.

The Outreach program is often contacted by individuals and schools for help with science fairs and projects. In order to take a more active role in Elementary Science Fairs, we have developed an Elementary Science Fair Program aimed at increasing student participation. The program consists of presentations that emphasize science as a process and focuses on the ideas that: all good science starts with a question, curiosity is the most important attribute of a scientist, and projects should be fun and based on student's interests. It also introduces the elementary students to the scientific method and its use in hypothesis testing and problem solving.

Bethel Park high school students present to a class of elementary students at Memorial about the science fair.

Recently we have been working with several talented Bethel Park high school students who have been actively involved in science. By having high school "role models" deliver the presentation, we hope to help dispel myths of who scientists are and even promote the idea that science is cool! In January 2007 the high school students traveled to Memorial Elementary School where they did an excellent job of getting the elementary students excited about science.

If you are interested in having the Elementary Science Fair Program come to your school, contact the Director of Outreach Programs, Dr. Alison Slinskey Legg.
