  Biological Sciences Honor Society

Beta Beta Beta Shield

The Alpha-Gamma chapter of Beta-Beta-Beta, the Biological Sciences Honor Society, was founded at the University of Pittsburgh on 20 May 1952. The purpose of the organization is threefold:

  • The development of sound scholarship
  • The promulgation of scientific truth
  • The promotion of research

Membership

Undergraduates may apply for membership in Tri-Beta in one of three classes (members can be promoted upward as they meet eligibility requirements; dues are a one-time only cost at the national and chapter levels):

Chapter Member

Eligibility Any student seriously interested in the Biological Sciences (this includes Biology, Ecology & Evolution, Molecular Biology, Neurosciences)
Responsibilities Chapter Dues : $5
Attend 50% of meetings & events
Privileges May participate in chapter activities
Cannot list tri-beta on resume

Associate Member

Eligibility Students must have a QPA > 3.00 in their major and have completed 2 lab courses in their major
Responsibilities Chapter Dues : $5
National Dues : $20
Attend 50% of meetings & events
Privileges May participate in chapter activities
List Associate Membership on resume

Regular Member

Eligibility Students must have a QPA > 3.00 in their major and have completed 3 lab courses in their major (one may be research eperience)
Responsibilities Chapter Dues : $5
National Dues : $30
Attend 50% of meetings & events
Priviledges May participate in chapter activities
May vote in officer elections
May be elected as officer
May purchase Fraternity keys
List Full Membership on resume

The procedure for securing membership includes the following:

  1. Obtain and file an application with the Alpha-Gamma chapter
  2. Submit one letter of recommendation from a Biological Sciences faculty member, or an active member of the organization
  3. Complete a personal interview with the membership committee
  4. Attend all meetings between the time of notification of eligibility and initiation
  5. Participate satisfactorily at Beta Beta Beta functions
  6. Participate in the Initiation Ceremony.

The Executive Council reserves the right to suspend any member who, without a valid excuse, fails to attend at least one-half of the regular monthly meetings.

Officers of the chapter include the following, who will serve as members of the Executive Council:

Four elected chairpersons of the standing committees listed below  

The election of officers takes place at the end of the winter term each year. Nominations are made from the floor and voting takes place by secret ballot. Candidates are elected by majority vote of active members present, which cannot be less than one-half the total active members. Run-off votes will be performed as necessary. The Couselor shall serve from the time of election until s/he resigns or a new election is petitioned by two-thirds of the active membership.


Standing Committees

The Publicity Committee publicizes all important open functions and special events by use of school publications, bulletin boards, faculty contacts, and other available means (including posting to the Tri-Beta web site). This committee also publishes a newspaper of the Alpha Gamma chapter periodically.

The Social Committee arranges for speakers, movies, parties, and other social functions.

The Membership Committee distributes membership applications, reviews applications for membership, and interviews prospecitve members.

The Project-Research Committee administers to chapter projects promoting research; this committee will make monthly reports to the Counselor and shall work in connection with him/her.
