1. When is registration?
Registration for Spring semesters typically begin in the third week of October; registration for the Fall semesters typically begin in the last week of February. Consult our calendar of appointments for registration to see when the next registration period begins. Appointments for senior (students with at least 86 credits completed by the end of the current term) begin on the first Tuesday of the registration period, while appointments for non-seniors begin the following Monday.

2. When and how do I sign up for a registration appointment?
Sign-up sheets will be available starting at 7:30 AM in A230 Langley starting the week before appointments begin, on that Thursday for seniors and the following Monday for non-seniors. Again, consult the calendar of appointments for registration to see when the next sign-up period begins.

3. How do I find out how many credits I’ll have at the end of this term?
Every semester you can obtain one free copy of your unofficial transcript from the Registrar’s Office, located in G-3 Thackeray Hall. At the top of this transcript you’ll find "Credits Earned" at the University of Pittsburgh. At the end of the transcript you’ll find "Advanced Standing Credits" if you have transferred any courses to the University of Pittsburgh. To determine the total number of credits completed, add "Credits Earned" to "Advanced Standing Credits", then add the number of credits for which you are enrolled this term to determine total credits at the end of this term. If that amounts to 86 credits, you're a senior!

4. Does it matter with which advisor I register?
No. In the Department of Biological Sciences we do not assign specific advisors. You are free to meet with either Christine or Meghan based on your schedule and/or preferences.

5. How long are registration appointments?
Registration appointments are about 20 minutes long for seniors and 30 minutes for non-seniors. Please come prepared as these are short meetings. If you need more time to discuss other issues please schedule an advising appointment before registration begins or after the registration period is over.

6. What should I bring to the registration appointment?
You must bring to your registration appointment a completed schedule planner form detailing the CRNs, course numbers, days and times, and reasons for preferred and alternate courses. This form is available online as well as in A230 Langley. And bring your own pen!

7. Do I have to take my registration form to Thackeray?
No. The Biological Sciences advisors will enter all registration data into the computer and send the forms to Thackeray Hall for you. Note that seniors with appointments on Tuesday and Wednesday will be registered on Thursday morning. These students should return to the Advising Office on that Thursday to pick up their copy of the registration form and verify that there were no problems with their registration.

8. Do you have group sessions?
No, we do not have group sessions at this time. All registration and advising appointments are one-on-one.

9. Do I have to meet with an advisor before registration?
No. You are not required to meet with an advisor other than to register. However, if you are new to the major, plan to graduate soon, or have any questions or concerns about your schedule or other issues, it is a good idea to schedule an advising appointment before registration begins. Christine is available for appointments M,T,F 1-4 and W,H 9-12. Meghan is available for appointments M,T,F 9-12 and W,H 1-4.

10. How do I check to see if a class is open?
In the Biological Sciences Advising Office there are three computers for checking course availability. You only need the CRN number. You can also check availability from home or any other computer connected to the internet by logging in to my.pitt.edu and then connecting to the Schedule of Classes under Communities. Again, you will need the CRN number.

11. I have more than one major. With which department do I register?
You should register with the department you have declared as your primary major. It is highly recommended, however, that you meet with advisors from all majors prior to registering to ensure you are on the right track.

12. When does the Add/Drop period start?
The Add/Drop period for Spring typically starts on the first Monday of November. Once you register, you may not change your schedule until the add/drop period begins. Consult the calendar of appointments for registration to ascertain the exact dates for the upcoming Add/Drop period.
