Langley Hall was erected in 1960 and was originally the home of the the Department of Geology, Department of Psychology, and the. Department of Biology, (now part of the Department of Biological Sciences). Langley Hall is named after Samuel Pierpont Langley, a Pittsburgh native and aviaion pioneer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Langley was chosen director of the the Allegheny Observatory and Professor of Astronomy and Physics in 1877, when he was 33 years old. Langley Hall was originally conceived as an annex to Clapp Hall, to which it is connected on the south side. For this reason, the room numbers in Langley Hall all begin with the letter 'A' to denote 'Annex.' The Department of Biological Sciences occupies the First, Second, Third, and Fifth floors of Langley Hall. Below is a map to locating Langley Hall on the University of Pittsburgh campus. To locate a specific room within Langley Hall, see our floor plans. See also Clapp Hall and Crawford Hall.
